How to Use Google Translate

Numerous languages may be translated with the Google Translate and Assistant applications.

Many different applications, websites, tools, and gadgets have the ability to translate languages. However, Google has two applications that can translate on iOS/iPad and Android smartphones if you ever need to interpret a menu or sign, transcribe a conversation, dictate material in a foreign language, or chat with someone who speaks a different language.

Numerous languages may be translated with the Google Translate app, either orally or through text. The program just requires that you talk, type, or write. You may also use the software to observe a live translation by pointing your smartphone at a sign or menu that is written in a different language.

Additionally, Google Assistant has a real-time interpreter mode that enables you to communicate with people who speak other languages. The Assistant will translate your words for you once you've asked Google for assistance with a particular language so you can carry on a discussion with the other party.

Here's how to utilize Google Assistant and the Google Translate app.

Google Translate

Android and iOS smartphones both support Google Translate. It may be downloaded through Google Play for Android users and the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad users, respectively. Although they have somewhat different layouts, both versions provide essentially the same functions.

Typed text can be translated into more than 100 different languages, photos can be seen translated into around 90 different languages, bilingual dialogues can be translated instantly into 43 different languages, and 95 different languages support drawing text for translation. For several languages, there are also offline translations accessible. Additionally, you have the option of saving translated words and phrases for later use.

French, Italian, German, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew, and Yiddish are just a few of the other languages supported by the program in addition to English.

Translate Text

Say you're looking for an Italian translation of a sentence from English. English should be chosen as the source language by tapping the name of the current language on the left side. Italian may be chosen as the target language by tapping the language's name on the right. Once you've done that, press the text entry area and begin typing the English word or phrase you want to translate.

Alternately, you may use your finger or a stylus to create an English sentence, one character at a time, by tapping the pen symbol. The program tries to anticipate what you will enter in full by presenting potential word and letter combinations as you type or write letters on the screen. If the recommended word is the same as what you were about to type, you can either keep writing or choose it. The software could at some time offer to enter the phrase in its entirety. Choose the term in that case.

The word or phrase is then shown in the target language by Google Translate. To hear the phrase said aloud in either language, hit the right arrow button next to the translation and then tap the speaker icon next to either sentence.

To copy the translation on an Android device, press the Copy icon. To share it or reverse the translation, tap the three dots at the top.

Translate Images

Using the camera on your phone, you may translate text included in a picture. Although some languages need a downloading language pack, Google Translate gives real-time translations. Tap the camera icon after selecting the source and destination languages. Aim the camera on your smartphone at the menu, sign, or document that is written in the source language. The translation is shown directly on the screen when the app has had time to detect the text.

The text may then be selected, heard said aloud, or sent to the Translate app on an iPhone by taking a snapshot of the translated image.

Take a picture of the image using an Android device. After scanning the image using the Scan icon, press each text string to view the translation. To translate a photo you've previously taken with your phone, tap the Import icon.

Transcribe Speech

The program allows you to talk in one language while having it translated into another. Speak your word or phrase into the app by tapping the microphone icon at the top of the screen. Your words are then translated into the target language by Google Translate. To hear the translation, tap the Speaker icon.

Another choice is to press the symbol for transcription before speaking. When finished, tap the microphone icon. The transcription can then be chosen and copied for pasting in another location.

Real-Time Conversations

You can have a back-and-forth chat with someone who speaks a different language with the Google Translate app. Tap the Conversation icon after selecting the two languages. The dialogue can then continue manually or automatically.

If you choose the manual method, you must tap the language of the current speaker's symbol. By selecting the Auto symbol, users may instruct Google to identify the speaker depending on the language being used.

Google Assistant

Google Assistant comes pre-installed on the majority of Android smartphones, but if you want it, you can download it from Google Play. Download and install the app from the App Store in order to utilize it on an iPhone.

English, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese are among the 44 languages supported by the Assistant's Interpreter mode.

On Google Home speakers, some smart speakers with built-in Google Assistant, and some smart clocks, interpreter mode is also available.

Translate Conversations

Launch Google Assistant on your smartphone, then tell it what language you wish to use to begin. There are other ways you can word your command, including:

  • "Hey Google, be my Spanish interpreter."
  • "Hey Google, help me speak French."
  • "Hey Google, interpret from English to Russian."
  • "Hey Google, Japanese interpreter."
  • "Hey Google, turn on interpreter mode."

When you instruct Google to activate interpreter mode, the assistant will recognize your native tongue and prompt you to select a language for the interpretation. Once the function is active, press the microphone icon and speak in your native tongue. Google speaks the translation and shows it in the other language.

When you deliver the device to the person you want to talk to and they start speaking in their language, Google will translate it for you. The program will pronounce and show their sentence in the language you have selected. Keep conversing back and forth with the other person in this manner.

Manual Translation

By default, the Assistant recognizes the language being spoken and instantly translates it into the language of your choice. Most of the time, that ought to go without a hitch. However, you may switch to manual if the function falters.

At the bottom of the screen, select Manual by tapping it. When speaking, tap the microphone symbol for your native tongue, and when someone else wishes to speak, hit the icon for their native tongue.

Keyboard Translation

You may switch between languages by using your keyboard. If you require a translation for something other than real-time communication, or if both of you are using your mobile device, this could be helpful.

Some languages' keyboards may need to be installed before you can utilize this option. On an Android phone, navigate to Settings and select the keyboards or languages option. You should be able to add new languages using an option on the menu. then choose the required language from the list.

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards on an iPhone or iPad. Select the language, then hit Done, then tap Add New Keyboard.

Hit Keyboard at the bottom to open the keyboard function, and then tap the blue keyboard symbol to choose your language. The translation will show up below as you type your message. Use the copy icon to paste the translation somewhere else, or tap the speaker button to hear the translation read out.

When you want to change the language for someone else, tap the keyboard icon for that individual and then touch the appropriate keyboard icon. Using the new keyboard, the other person can reply. Tap the X button in the upper right corner or just say "Stop" to exit Interpreter mode.
